She was born in 1980 in New York to a very musical family – her mother was a dance teacher and his father a singer. Ashanti started singing in the local choir at a very young age and she also attended dance lessons very early on. Her real talent was discovered by her mother when Ashanti was 12, discovery that led to demo tapes being made of her singing and dancing and being sent out to record companies.
