Favre was born in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1969. He became interested in sports in his high school years, playing not only football, but baseball, too. After high school he received a scholarship to Southern Mississippi. They wanted him to play defensive back, but Favre preferred to be playing quarterback, position that proved to be the one for him indeed – out of the ten games he started as a freshman, he won six.
Favre’s promising career almost came to an end early on, in 1990, because of a car accident. He underwent major surgery in hospital – doctors removed 30 inches of his small intestine - , but he proved that he was a fighter, made an extremely quick recovery and led his team to victory only six weeks after the accident.
He became a pro in 1991, playing for the Atlanta Falcons, then for 16 seasons for the Green Bay Packers. During that period he won three AP MVP Awards, the first in 1995, achieving one record after the other. However, professional football gets rough and Favre suffered numerous injuries and developed a pain medication addiction as the result of the treatments. He went to rehab in May, 1996, but even so, he led his team to victory again that season.
Favre kept on being an extraordinary, successful player despite the personal tragedies that followed in his life. His father died of a heart attack in December, 2003; his brother in law died in a car accident on Favre’s own property in October, 2004 and his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer the same year; in 2005, his property suffered severe damage when Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi area, but he continued playing, nevertheless and continued his series of success, too.
Favre announced his plans to retire from the game in 2008 and after long and complex discussions with the management of his team, they parted ways. He went on playing though, for the New York Jets in 2008, then for the Minnesota Vikings in 2009. He retired from the game officially only in 2011. Favre has not broken all ties to football, though - he was the offensive coordinator for the Oak Grove High School team until 2014.
He is involved in charity work as well. His foundation has organized a number of fundraising campaigns for Mississippi and Wisconsin and helps children with serious illnesses.
