Johnson was born in Miami, Florida in 1978. He had no connections with the football and he attended the local Miami Beach Senior High School after which he transferred to the Santa Monica College in California in 1997.
After getting transferred to the Oregon State University in 2000, he was recruited by Coach Dennis Erickson and thus he started playing for the Oregon State Beavers football team. He impressed his team as well as the fans by leading to an 11-1 victory over the rivals Notre Dame.
In the second round of the 2001 NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals would choose Johnson. After a moderate rookie’s year, Johnson would break the Bengals records by having 1,355 receiving yards in 2003.
