She was born in El Centro, California, in 1946, as Cheryl Sarkisian. Her parents are John Sarkisian, an Armenian American who was working as a bus driver and Jackie Jean crouch, an American of English, Irish, German and Cherokee descent. Her father had alcohol and drug problems and this led to her mother divorcing when she was just 9 months old. Her mother would remarry two times. Her mother was struggling to have a breakthrough as an actress but worked small jobs. The family had many financial problems, and Cher remembered that at one point she had to tie rubber bands to hold her shoes together.
Although she was never a great student, Cher always stood out in school. She organized and choreographed girls and sang the roles of boys who would not cooperate, a thing which probably contributed to her unusually low voice. She remembers that she always wanted to be someone famous.
When she was just 16, Cher dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles. She started taking acting classes and worked as a dancer in many small clubs. There she met Sonny Bono, her future husband and producer. The couple produced several hits, including Dream Baby as well as a cover from Bob Dylan, All I Really Want to Do, which entered the Billboard 100 on the 15th spot in 1965. From that year on, the couple would perform as the Sonny & Cher duo. Their single I Got You Babe hit the 1st Billboard spot.
At the end of the 60s, their music was getting unpopular. She started career in television where she appeared in several shows such as The Merv Griffin Show. She also appeared with her husband in The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. The couple would divorce in 1974.
Cher would go on to release many albums such as Cher, Heart of Stone, Believe and many more which hit the top spots in Billboard charts as well as play in movies such as Moonstruck or Mask. During her long career she received a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award as well as a Golden Globe.
