He was born as Christopher Julius “Chris” Rock in Andrews, South California in 1965. His parents would soon move to Brooklyn, New York where he would attend the local school. However, Chris’ parents were worried that he was not getting the proper education and so they arranged him to be bused to one of the white schools. Chris later recalled that while his parents wanted a better education in a better neighborhood, he actually got worse education in a worse neighborhood in addition to “ass whippings”. He was bullied and abused there by white boys, which prompted the parents to get him out of the James Madison High School.
Rock worked in several restaurants before he started doing his first comedy acts in 1984 in New York City’s Catch a Rising Star. He gradually became better known in the closed comedy circuit which eventually got him several minor roles in movies. He soon befriended Eddie Murphy who would mentor him and give him roles in movies such as Beverly Hills Cop II.
In 1990 Rock started doing sketch comedy in the popular Saturday Night Live show. He appeared alongside young comedians such as Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider.
