Courtney was born in a Californian family. Her mother, Linda Carroll, was a psychotherapist, and her father, Hank Harrison, was a music manager who briefly worked with the Grateful Dead band. His daughter, who was five at that time, appeared on the group album’s back cover.
Courtney’s parents were successful professionally, but they were not rich. Courtney never experienced poverty, but she did not have an easy childhood because of other reasons. According to Linda, Courtney’s father had fed LSD to the little girl. In 1969, Courtney’s parents divorced, her mother being left with full custody of her daughter. Since Linda’s love life was never too stable, Courtney often met “new dads”. In fact, as a result of her a tumultuous romantic life, Linda gave birth to four more kids, two girls and two boys.
At the age of 8, Courtney was left with one of her stepfathers, and her mother moved to New Zealand with a new husband. When she was 14, Courtney was already a troubled teenager and was caught shoplifting. As a consequence, she ended up in a correctional facility for young people. For another two years, Courtney lived in foster homes. When she became legally emancipated, Courtney left everyone she knew and moved to Oregon.
To support herself, Courtney she began working as a stripper, but she took classes at the University of Portland, studying English. A small inheritance received from her grandparents is considered by many the basis for the later Courtney Love net worth, as she used the money to continue her studies in England, attending theology classes at Trinity College. Her great efforts to get proper education did not help her to gain more until the mid ‘80s, when she could finally quit stripping.
Her music career began in 1989, in an alternative rock band that she formed, called Hole. With this band, Courtney gained recognition and appreciation as a very talented vocalist and rhythm guitarist. The debut album – Pretty on the Inside – released in 1991, did not impact the American music scene too much. Five years later, Love enriched her career with a part in a movie: The People vs. Larry Flint. This film brought her a nomination to the Golden Globe and an international fame that has been raising ever since.
