The Humble Beginnings: Dennis Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey, but after his father left, he grew up with his two sisters in Oak Cliff, one of the poorest neighborhoods of Dallas, Texas. All three Rodman children showed interest and skills in basketball, although Dennis’ sisters were favored by the mother and considered more talented.
During high school, he was never considered a potential basketball player, due to his height – 5 feet and 6 inches at that period. After finishing high school and getting a job as a janitor at the Dallas Forth Worth International Airport, Dennis underwent a post-puberty growth spurt, reaching his current height of 6 feet and 7 inches. This is when he considered trying for a basketball career once again.
He enrolled in the North Central Texas College at Gainesville, but only stayed for one trimester, being expelled for poor academic performance, although he scored an average of 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds for the basketball team.
First Achievements in Basketball: The next stop for young Dennis Rodman was a NAIA school – the Oklahoma State University – where his talent for basketball became apparent. He was three-time NAIA All-American at the OSU and scored an average of 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds during three seasons.
Taking part in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a basketball camp pre-drafting potential NBA players, Rodman won the Most Valuable Player title and, most importantly, made a good impression on agents recruiting for the Detroit Pistons team.
