Derrick Martell Rose was born in 1988 in the Englewood area in Chicago. Known as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city, he had a hard time as a child. He is the youngest of 4 children, and his older brothers were all basketball players. They taught him how to play ball and showed him all there is to know about the sport in various neighborhood courts. As he practiced more and his increasing talented showed, he started to gain attention from other basketball circles. However, his mother was afraid of him being used and exploited by street agents of getting in conflict with street thugs so his outside access was restricted.
In 2003, Rose went to the Simeon Career Academy where he was an attraction, especially to the coaches. He played as a freshman in the Wolverines team, scoring many points per match and leading to many victories. In 2006 during his senior year, Rose managed to win with Wolverines the Chicago Public League.
He then went to college and played with the University of Memphis Tigers. He then announced that he wouldn’t play the final three seasons for the Memphis Tigers and decided to go for the 2008 NBA draft. He was drafted first overall by the Chicago Bulls, a feat which hadn’t been accomplished by a guard since the year of 1996 when Allen Iverson was drafted in the same fashion. At the final of the season, he was declared the NBA Rookie of the Year.
However, several injuries to his knee prevented him from shining at the Chicago Bulls for many seasons. After a series of injuries, Rose came back for the 2013-2014 season only to tear his meniscus. In the 2015-2016 season, he sustained a left orbital bone fracture and is thus playing with a face mask. In November, Rose set the season record for scoring 29 points and helped the Chicago Bulls to win over Oklahoma.
