Dr. Dre was born Andre Romelle Young in 1965 in Los Angeles. He was brought up in the South Central area in the midst of the increasing tensions between the East and West Coasts gangs. He learned to DJ and became a part of the group World Class Wreckin' Cru. In 1988 he joined the group N.W.A. with Ice Cube and Eazy-E under the label Ruthless Records. They released the wildly successful Straight Outta Comptom album which was way ahead of its time. The album was one of the most violent and profane albums released into the rap game at that point. It was a changing point for the rap world and eventually went double platinum.
In the early 90's Dre left N.W.A. and founded his own record label with Suge Knight, Death Row Records. This label would later sign some legendary West Coast artists like Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Dre released his first solo album, The Chronic, which earned him a Grammy and led to his success with his own label, Aftermath Entertainment, which was established in 1996. Much of Dr. Dre's wealth came from his ability to sign very successful artists to the Aftermath label. He discovered Eminem and also signed Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent to Aftermath Entertainment. His ability to recognize talent and take advantage of it before others was one thing that made him so successful in the music industry.
Dr. Dre also did some acting and producing in the film industry. He appeared in several films including Training Day, The Wash and Set it Off. He joined a company owned by New Line Cinema in 2007 to begin producing dark comedies and horror films. He also produced the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton. This was a biographical film showing the success and rise of the N.W.A. Dre has also had several endorsements throughout his career that have added to his wealth including Coors Light, Dr. Pepper, St. Ides and Chrysler.
One of Dre's latest ventures is the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. They were introduced in 2008 and designed by Dre himself. He was co-owner of the headphone enterprise along with Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine. He sold partial ownership of Beats in 2011 to HTC for $310 million. Then in 2014 Beats Audio was sold entirely to Apple for $3 billion dollars. Dre's cut of that, about $750 million before taxes, greatly increased his net worth. Dre also designed a line of laptops with HP. With these enterprises Dr Dre likely became the richest man in Hip Hop surpassing both Diddy and Jay Z.
Dr Dre is much more than a rap mogul. Throughout his career he has been involved with several very well known and successful artists. He also had an amazing solo career. Dre founded his own production company and discovered new talent which only added to his wealth. His line of headphones, called Beats, and his partnership with HP to produce his own laptop were also very successful business ventures for him. Overall, Dr. Dre has shown that he is a smart businessman along with a great musician. The combination has allowed him to be one of the wealthiest men in the Hip Hop industry.
