Although most of the school children were African Americans, like himself, Jeffrey suffered at the hands of his classmates, who picked on his small size, taunted and hit him. Eventually, his mother transferred him to Middle School 172 in Glen Oakes. However, Jeffrey Atkins only earned his GED in 2012 – at the age of 36 years old.
Breaking into the Hip Hop World: Poor academic performance was not a top priority for young Jeffrey Atkins, who chose the stage name Ja Rule – a moniker used by one of his closest friends. He founded the hip-hop group Cash Money Click in 1993, but his success came as a solo artist, when he signed up with Irv Gotti’s record label Murder Inc. Records (later renamed The Inc. Records), in 1998.
One year into his record deal, Ja Rule released his first album, Venni Vetti Vecci, which reached the 3rd place on the Billboard 200 top. The album sold in 184,000 copies in the first week after the release, marking the start of Ja Rule net worth of $5 million. The album later became a platinum disc in the US.
2002: The Golden Year: Career wise, 2002, was Ja Rule’s best year, with 3 Grammy nominations, and 6 wins: MTV Awards Best Hip Hop Video, World Music Awards World’s Best Selling Rap Artist, BET Awards Best Male Hip Hop Artist, GQ Musician of the Year Award, Teen Choice Awards Male Artist of the Year and NAACP Image Awards Best Rap Artist.
A productive artist, Ja Rule had already released 4 albums between 1999 and 2002: the debut album was followed by Rule 3:36, Pain Is Love, and The Last Temptation. He continued to be busy recording more albums until 2004, when his record label was raided by the FBI on suspicions of drug trafficking and, ultimately, after years of struggle, shut down.
Acting Career: In between releasing hip hop albums, Ja Rule also tried his hand at acting, appearing in Turn It Up, alongside Jason Statham and Pras from The Fugees, The Fast and the Furious (minor role), and Scary Movie 3.
Legal Troubles and Future Plans: Ja Rule served a 1-year sentence for possession of drugs between 2011 and 2012 and, upon release, was imprisoned for 6 more months for tax evasion. Upon settling his legal and financial problems, Ja Rule returned to his musical career. His 9th album, Genius Loves Company, is set to be released in 2016.
