Born Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton in 1985 in Stevenage, England to a white British mother and a black British father, Hamilton showed interest in cars from a young age. It is reported that in 1995 he approached the McLaren team principal to tell him that he wanted to race for the team. He managed to do just that a few years later.
Hamilton’s parents divorced when he was just two years old. Up until he was 12, he lived with his mother and step sisters, after which he moved to live with his father. In 1991, his father bought him a radio controlled car. The following year, Hamilton finished 2nd place in the national BRCA championships. He later recalled that he was participating against and constantly beating adults.
After seeing his early successes, his father decided to buy him a kart while also promising that he would support Hamilton in his racing career only if he worked hard in school. However, Hamilton’s father found it difficult to support his son in his costly passion, and so he had to quit his IT manager position and become a contractor. He was reportedly working three jobs at the same time in order to be able to support young Hamilton. His father would also become his full-time manager up until 2010.
After his encounter with the McLaren team manager in 1995, Lewis Hamilton managed to get signed for the Young Driver Support Program less than 3 years afterwards. He won several championships and starting driving for McLaren in 2007, entering the Formula One world twelve years after the encounter.
Hamilton managed to set quite a few records during his career. He became the youngest British to enter the Young Driver Support Program as well as the youngest Brit ever to win an F1 Championship until his record was broken two years later. He finished 2nd in the 2007 Formula One Championships just behind Kimi Raikkonen, the same year he started racing for McLaren. He also went on to win the 2008, 2014 and 2015 F1 Championships, being the only British in history ever two win two times in a row. Lewis Hamilton was also named the BBC Personality of the Year in 2015.
