Pharrell Williams was born in 1973 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was the oldest son in a family of five, with his father being a handyman and his mother being a teacher. Williams’ ancestry goes way back to the 19th century in North Carolina and Virginia.
While at a summer band camp, Williams was introduced to Chad Hugo who was to become his lifelong friend and musical partner. While they were already members of marching bands, they joined to form a band where Williams played drums and keyboards with Hugo playing saxophone. Williams was already attending the Princess Anne High School and it is there that he got the nickname Skateboard P.
At the start of the 90s, Williams and Hugo joined to form a production R&B group which they called the Neptunes along with two friends, Shay Haley and Mike Etheridge. Later on they were discovered by producer Teddy Riley, whose studio was near the high school, while playing at a high school talent show. As soon as the members of the group graduated from high school, they obtained a contract with Riley.
As part of the Neptunes, Williams wrote songs for various popular artists such as Sisters with Voices, contributing to their 2nd hit titled Right Here (UK mix). Alongside Hugo, Williams also signed the rap group Clipse through William’s imprint. By 1994, Williams and Hugo had already obtained recognition through their production duo the Neptunes, a thing which led to writing more songs for popular artists such as Britney Spears as well as gaining a wide fan and audience.
Williams has won a total of 10 Grammy Awards out of which two were gained with his partner Hugo for their contributions through the Neptunes.
