McIlroy was born in 1989. He was taught how to play golf by his father, at a very early age, soon after he started walking. A little bit later, McIlroy joined the local golf club to be its youngest ever member. He won his first international championship in Miami, Florida, in the 9-10 years old age bracket, and by the age of 15 he was already among Europe’s finest young golfers and a member of the team that won the Junior Ryder Cup in Ohio in 2004. In 2005 he becomes the youngest ever winner of two championships in Ireland and in 2006 he wins the European Amateur championship in Italy.
He starts his professional career in 2007. He soon gets invited by Tiger Woods to play in the Target World Challenge and the AT&T National of 2008, but he prefers the European Open. By the end of 2007 he is already ranked 79th on the top 200 of the Official World Golf Ranking, position that he improves to number 39 by the end of the following year.
McIlroy plays in a Masters Tournament for the first time in 2009 and during the year he participates in numerous other high-profile events as well such as the U.S. Open, PGA and the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The following period brought him lots of success as well – in 2010 he wins his first PGA Tour and he helps Europe get back the Ryder Cup, too; in 2011 he wins the U.S. open; in 2012 he won the Honda Classic, which also brought him the number 1 position in the official world ranking and in 2014 he was the youngest golfer ever who won the British Open (younger than Tiger Woods, who won the Open at the age of 24).
McIlroy makes money not only from golfing, but from various other activities as well – out of the 24.3 million he made last year, only about 4 million was money he earned from his prizes, the rest came from endorsements. The 26-year-old is certainly standing in front of lots of wonderful possibilities as an extraordinary, talented athlete and as a businessman as well.
