Born Samuel Timothy McGraw in Delhi, Louisiana, 1967, he was the son of a waitress and a star pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets. His father, Tug McGraw, lived in an apartment above Betty D’Agostino, and the two had a relationship. Betty became pregnant and was sent to Louisiana to give birth to the baby. Tim grew up not knowing who his real father was, and up until he was 11 he believed that his biological father was Betty’s husband, Horace Smith.
He discovered his birth certificate after searching through the closet in his mother’s room while looking for Christmas presents. Betty took him to see his real father whom denied being so for several years. When Tim was 18, Tug McGraw admitted to being his biological father and the two remained close until Tug’s death in 2004.
Tim played several sports including baseball even if he didn’t know about his father and how he was a professional athlete playing for some of the most popular teams in the US. While attending the Northeast Louisiana University, Tim learned to play the guitar. He played in various places for tips, although he later claimed that his roommate used to hide his guitar due to his apparent lack of talent. He dropped out of college in 1989 when his hero Keith Whitley passed away and he went to Nashville in the hope of making it in the music industry.
McGraw got his breakthrough in 1990 due to a coincidence. He recorded his demo tape and gave it to his father. On day, when Tug was driving home with a friend who knew executives from Curb Records, he played the cassette and the friend recommended taking it to the record company. Soon after, Tim obtained a contract with Curb Records which would launch his successful career.
McGraw released many albums and singles, many of which entered the Billboard charts top spots. 10 of his albums reached the top spot in Top Country albums and he was also awarded with three Grammy Awards as well as fourteen Academy of music awards. He also played a supporting actor role in several films including The Blind Side as well as the main actor in Flicka and Country Strong.
