Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook in 1981. She made her first appearance on television at the age of four on The Cosby Show, but she was more interested in music than in acting in her childhood and later on as well. She attended singing and dancing lessons from a very early age and from the age of 7 she learned the piano and classical music, too. She became a student of the Professional Performing Arts School when she was twelve, majoring in choir. She started writing music at the age of 14.
Keys started working with manager Jeff Robinson in 1994 who helped the young and extraordinarily talented artist get noticed and appreciated. A bit later she signed with Columbia Records and tried to manage her career as a musician and her studies at Columbia University simultaneously, but the music industry being demanding as it is, she chose her music career and dropped out of school after a month.
The year 2000 marked the start of the collaboration between Keys and J Records. She released Songs in A Minor, her first studio album and an instant success that later on became a six-time Platinum and brought Keys 5 Grammy awards in 2002.
She released her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys in 2003 – another resounding success that debuted on the top of the Billboard 200. Several songs on the album were released as singles – she performed one of them, Higher Ground, with Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz at the MTV Music Awards in 2004.
The years that followed were not less successful: her Unbreakable won her 3 NAACP Image Awards in 2005 and she started acting, too. In 2007 she appeared next to Ben Affleck in Smokin’ Aces, then in The Nanny Diaries alongside Scarlett Johansson.
She continued releasing new albums, too – As I Am came out in 2007, The Element of Freedom in 2009, Girl on Fire in 2012. The second decade of the 21st century brought about motherhood as well as interest for fashion and other branches of business – Keys has her own collection of sneakers, she has an ongoing collaboration with a major telecommunication company.
