Though he began attending formal piano lessons only at the age of seven, he started playing when he was three. At eleven he won his first scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music and in 1966 he formed his first band and it was around that year that he started composing music with Bernie Taupin, too. His first album came out in 1969, followed by numerous other albums.

By 1975 he had seven albums out, all of them topping the charts and bringing Elton John international recognition. Success continued through the 1980’s and the 1990’s, too – in 1990 Elton John released Sacrifice, his first single to top the UK charts and in 1992 he and Taupin signed a $39 million dollar, twelve-year contract with Warner Bros. Records.

The year was marked by Elton John’s being inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, too. In 1994 he composes the music for The Lion King – an album that sold 15 million copies by 1999 and also brought a Grammy to the composer.

In 2000, Elton releases his 27th album and starts the collaboration with DreamWorks. It is at the beginning of the 21th century that he starts working on theater projects as well. In 2004 he does a season of appearances at the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and 2007 marks another important year in this amazing career: Elton John performs for the 60th time in the Madison Square Garden for his 60th anniversary.

Recently, Elton John has started collaborations with a number of well-known artists – he performed with Lady Gaga in 2010, with Kate Bush in 2011, with Ed Sheeran in 2013, to mention just a few. In 2012 he performs at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, then in Kiev.

Elton John is 68 years of age, but he is not planning to retire any time soon. He will release his thirty-third studio album in February, 2016 and he continues to work with life-long composer partner Bernie Taupin, as well.
